It’s official: after months (possibly years) of messing
about and distracting myself, work on the first “full” Eaten by Monsters record
has begun.
Following the success of recording strategy employed for the
One Guitar… EP, I shall be attempting
to capture this recording “live”. I’ve
come to the conclusion that in the vast majority of cases recording to a
click-track is a heinous crime; one that saps all the life-energy out of a
song. One of the joys of playing live
with a band is the spontaneity of it all, and the organic, natural approach to
keeping the beat.
Now I realise that I’m starting to sound like some sort of
crazy hippy, but it is true. The reason
my previous attempts at replicating my “sound” on tape have ended up seeming
somewhat lacklustre is because the sterile recording environment (and the
dreaded click-track in particular) had sucked out all the life and vitality
from the songs. When I play them live,
virtually all the songs have a certain rubato quality to them; a quality which
is obliterated when I’m forced to adhere to a precise tempo.
So anyway… onwards and upwards!
The demos have been recorded, and rehearsals have been
encouraging, so now the first squares in the final patchwork can be
started. Next stop: drums!
